Morocco VIII: Treintaiuno - Thirtyone

It’s almost eight o’clock in the morning and we are already checking the wave of Boilers at sunrise. The forecast has showed an important swell increase so we decided to leave the lonely south of Morocco in order to try some mythic waves. Around Tagazhout people have suffered three flat days which make us forget about the idea of a not-crowded surf session today. The rights were breaking over the rocks while the peak was more and more crowded every set. Suddenly, that quite session that some early riser were enjoying, became an international madness.

I paddle the first wave of the set, make some good turns and try to run the whole last section without success. The worst part was that the wave broke my leash, leaving me in the middle of nowhere, with no clue about my surfboard and a pretty big set approaching. I tried to focus on getting out of there. It wasn’t deep enough to dive under the waves so I just hold as tight as I could trying not to be roll over the rocks. I started to swim right to the little cliff in front of the waves. I thought I spotted my surfboard over some rocks and it didn’t seem broken. While I was climbing up the cliff, some Americans rescued my board from getting messed up by incoming waves. Once at the top, I thanked them, and we started tripping how lucky I was that my board barely suffered any damage after this crazy situation. To the point where i went back out into the water, and an hour later, broken fin.

Some some Moroccans had blocked the way out in order to force you to take another exit where they wait you with a chain and the friendly request of some Dirhams in order for them to lift the chain. We were tired of all this kind of black mailing, so we just drove over the rocks, listening to the moroccans shouting at us, reminding us of our mothers.

Taking avdantage of our currently situation in Tagazhout: epicenter of the Moroccan surf world, a place left by the authentic years ago, and now in present day, substituted by pizza rastaurants, surfcamps, surfshops and all kinds of tourist attractions. We avoid the typical cous-cous and Tajin meals eating huge pizza slices. After changing my board we went to check out a different wave that we spotted yesterday evening up from a cliff.

What we found there was awesome: The longest, most rippeable perfect right point break i have ever surfed. I couldn’t say how many turns you could fit into this wave, all I know that when it was over, my legs were burning, i had a permanent smile and it was impossible to hold up a big claim! A perfect five hours long session.

Paddles back to the peak were up to five-teen minutes long, but a motivating one too, since you got to see all the others ripping down the line.. It was a huge bummer my camera was still broken and couldn’t get the proper focus to take pictures. They would have been the gnarliest pictures of the entire trip

To put and end to our day, we drove to the next big city, Agadir, to buy a few beers to go with the delicious new year's dinner our landlord was preparing. We were exhausted, but we had too much to celebrate.
